How Asbestos Removal Works

The process of clearing asbestos from a building is highly regulated to ensure the safety of both the occupants and the wider community. We follow a strict eight-step methodology that focuses on containing the hazard and providing a verified, clean environment once the work is finished.

Our team begins by conducting a detailed inspection of the site to confirm the presence and condition of any asbestos-containing materials. This survey allows us to understand the specific risks involved and develop a comprehensive plan of action tailored to the layout of your property.

For certain types of high-risk asbestos work, we are required by law to notify the Health and Safety Executive at least fourteen days before the project starts. This ensures that the relevant authorities are aware of the removal and that the work is being performed by a fully licensed and competent contractor.

To prevent the spread of hazardous fibres, we isolate the work area using high-grade polythene sheeting. We build a negative pressure enclosure that uses specialized fans to keep the air moving inward, ensuring that no microscopic particles can drift into other parts of the building or the outdoors.

Our technicians use controlled techniques to carefully detach the materials. We use a method known as shadow vacuuming and apply a wetting fluid to the asbestos to keep it damp. This significantly lowers the chance of any dust being released into the air during the extraction phase.

Once the material is removed, it is immediately placed into specialized red and clear waste sacks. These are double-bagged and taped shut to create an airtight seal. This ensures that the hazardous waste is securely packaged before it ever leaves the containment zone.

After the bulk removal is complete, we perform a deep clean of the entire work area. This involves using H-class vacuums, which are fitted with filters capable of trapping the smallest asbestos fibres. We also perform a thorough wet-wipe of all surfaces to ensure no dust remains behind.

Before we dismantle the containment barriers, an independent analyst will visit the site. They perform a rigorous air monitoring test to verify that the air inside the enclosure is safe and free from fibres. Once the test is passed, they will issue a certificate that allows the area to be reoccupied.

The final step is the secure transport of the bagged waste to a dedicated landfill site that is licensed to accept asbestos. We handle all the necessary paperwork, providing you with a consignment note that confirms the material has been disposed of in full accordance with environmental laws.

Types of Asbestos We Can Remove

Asbestos was used in thousands of building products across the UK, particularly between the 1950s and the late 1990s. While there are several varieties, the following three were the most prevalent in construction.

Chrysotile (White Asbestos)

This is the most common form of asbestos and belongs to the serpentine mineral family. Its fibres are generally soft and flexible. You will frequently find white asbestos in products like corrugated roofing sheets, garage panels, water tanks, and decorative finishes such as Artex or floor tiles.

Amosite (Brown Asbestos)

Brown asbestos is a more hazardous variety with sharp, needle-like fibres. It was highly valued for its heat resistance and strength. It is commonly found in thermal insulation products, including ceiling tiles, internal partition walls, and the fire-resistant boards found behind old boilers and heaters.

Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos)

Considered the most dangerous of the three due to its extremely thin fibres, blue asbestos was often used in high-temperature industrial settings. It is most likely to be found in the spray-on insulation used to protect structural steel, as well as in pipe lagging and certain types of heavy-duty rope seals or gaskets.
